The Story

Wolf Blass Black Label Red Blend 2019 is an iconic, deeply powerful, and masterfully orchestrated Australian red wine that beautifully illustrates the house's legendary philosophy of multi-regional, synergistic blending. Sourced from the finest, optimum-maturity parcels across the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and the Adelaide Hills, this vintage handles a warm growing season with remarkable elegance and structure. In the glass, it displays an inky, impenetrable black-ruby core with a vibrant deep red rim. The nose is exceptionally rich and complex, unfolding in opulent layers of blackberry, crushed blackcurrant, and dark plum, seamlessly laced with heavy notes of espresso coffee, panforte, sweet tobacco leaf, and smoky, toasted-nut characters from barrel fermentation. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense, and enveloping, showing a magnificent, mouth-filling fluid coherence. Its concentrated vortex of blue and black forest fruit flavors is supported by a massive yet beautifully polished framework of fine, chocolatey tannins and subtle natural acidity. Subtle accents of anise, savory spice, and cedary oak carry through to an authoritative, long-lingering finish of exceptional endurance.

Food Pairing: Pairs spectacularly with garlic and rosemary-crusted prime rib roast, slow-braised beef short ribs, grilled venison loin, or mature extra-sharp vintage cheddar.

95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Proudly displayed on the label are two pieces of information that speak to the history of this wine: "47th vintage" and "record four time Jimmy Watson Trophy winner 1974, 1975, 1976, 1999." The trifecta of three vintages in a row is very impressive! I digress. The 2019 Black Label Cabernet Shiraz (and Malbec) is sourced from three key regions in South Australia: Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. It's concentrated, intense, saturating and dense, and despite my personal predilections running toward fine/detailed/nuanced, etc., it's difficult not to love this wine. Enveloping folds of flavor embrace the mouth and reverberate out over the long finish. A profusion of tannin only becomes more plush and plump as the wine wears on, the fruit a vortex of flavor and density. Excellent. Very full-bodied and big.

94 Points - James Suckling

Aromas of blackcurrants, plums, graphite and asphalt. Full-bodied with chewy tannins. Dense and rich with an abundance of black fruit and spice washing over the palate. Very good intensity and steady through the finish. Muscular. Best after 2024. Screw cap.
