The Story

Tyrrell's Vat 1 Hunter Sémillon 2019 is an iconic, exceptionally pure, and tightly bound white wine that perfectly captures the essence of its historic terroir. Sourced from dry-grown, own-rooted vines planted as early as 1923, it reveals a delicate, lifted bouquet of honeysuckle, zested lime, green apple, and wet river stones, accented by subtle hints of white flowers and crushed shells. On the palate, it is featherlight yet intensely concentrated, driven by a crystalline, razor-sharp acidity and a chalky mineral texture. The finish is remarkably long, precise, and refreshing, delivering a mouthwatering tension that promises magnificent evolution and complexity in the cellar for decades to come.

Food Pairing:

Perfectly suited for fresh shellfish, freshly shucked oysters with a squeeze of lemon, salt cod fritters, and delicately prepared seafood dishes.

96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

As of this tasting at the end of 2025, the 2019 Vat 1 Semillon is nearly seven years from its harvest. The wine is yet to fully develop the characteristic and desirable toastiness that is endemic to great, older Hunter Valley Semillon, and yet there are whiffs of it. And it is good. There are notes of creamed honey on toast, pressed linen, lemon pith, ocean spray, crushed shells and wheat. In the mouth, the wine is featherlight, intense and long through the finish. This is very good indeed. 10.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast

There's beautiful concentration to this vintage of the famed “Vat 1.” A spicy, waxy, flinty character combines with the grapefruit and lemon aromas—the honeyed edges just starting to form. There's flesh on the bones of the palate, with bright acidity set to last and lovely textural intrigue. This is an excellent vintage of this distinctive Aussie style, and one that should keep evolving for decades.
95 Points - James Suckling

So much honeysuckle, honey, green melon, lime and heather character. It’s medium-bodied with bright acidity. Flavorful and so long. Tight on the palate. Drinking beautifully now.

92 Points - Wine Spectator

A distinctive white, with lanolin, beeswax and baked apple flavors that are vivid and highlighted by notes of grilled lemon and Meyer lemon zest on a sleek, juicy frame. A hint of toasted, salted acorn lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2030.
