The Story
The San Felice Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino 2012 is an elegant, structured, and beautifully evolved Old World red wine from a hot, dry vintage that favored deep concentration and savory complexity. It pours a deep garnet-red color with classic tawny reflections at the rim, lifting from the glass with a sophisticated, highly expressive bouquet of dried black cherries, baked plums, and wild Mediterranean brushwood, seamlessly layered with tertiary notes of leather, cigar box, iron ore, and damp earth. On the palate, this full-bodied, pure Sangiovese is remarkably smooth, dense, and savory, coating the mouth with mature intensities of dark stone fruits, balsamic reductions, and dried spices. Matured meticulously for 36 months in a combination of traditional Slavonian oak casks and 500-liter tonneaux, its rich, big-boned power is supported by a vibrant, food-friendly acidity and firm, fully integrated noble tannins that carry into an exceptionally long, persistent, and beautifully balanced finish.
Food Pairing: This mature, muscular, and highly structural vintage pairs beautifully with rich, rustic fare, including slow-cooked wild boar ragù over thick pasta, roasted venison stews, prime cuts of grilled dry-aged ribeye steak, and highly aged artisanal cheeses like Pecorino Toscano.
96 Points - Wine Spectator
In a traditional style, featuring beefy tannins and savory earth notes, with a core of leather and cherry flavors. Shows some sweetness midpalate and picks up energy on the long finish. Hangs together, ending in an uplifting, resonant manner. Best from 2021 through 2036.
93 Points - James Suckling
A ripe and layered Brunello with plum and berry character plus hints of chocolate and walnuts. Medium to full body and round and velvety tannins. Flavorful finish. Why wait on this?
93 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Forest floor, truffle, new leather, ripe berry and a balsamic note are some of the aromas you'll find in this delicious red. The fresh, chewy palate doles out fleshy black cherry, chopped mint and white pepper notes, while big, round tannins provide structure. It's already enjoyable but will offer years of fine drinking. Enjoy 2018–2024.
