The Story
Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2004 is an exceptionally regal, robust, and flawlessly balanced prestige Champagne crafted as a historical tribute to the house's most illustrious and devoted patron. Sourced exclusively from ancient, low-yielding Grand Cru vineyards across the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, this legendary cuvée utilizes a secret, family-guarded blend heavily dominated by old-vine Pinot Noir to provide architectural structure and breadth, beautifully refined by a smaller portion of elegant Chardonnay. Pouring a deep, luminous golden-yellow hue with an extraordinarily fine, steady stream of microscopic bubbles, it opens with an opulent and commanding bouquet of matured apples, fresh apricot jam, and lemon curd, layered harmoniously over deeper nuances of gingerbread, spiced hazelnuts, honeycomb, and fresh warm brioche. On the palate, it exhibits a full-bodied, vinous, and texturally dense mouthfeel where a concentrated core of stone fruits and crème de cassis is enlivened by a driving spine of crystalline mountain acidity and a plush, pillowy mousse. Having matured on its fine lees for more than a decade in the coldest, deepest subterranean chalk cellars of Épernay, it culminates in a majestic, long, and powerful finish anchored by a distinctively chalky, saline-infused mineral grip and subtle toasty notes.
Food Pairing: Pairs brilliantly with roasted capon stuffed with morels, slow-braised sweetbreads, butter-poached lobster tails, or mature Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese aged for 18 months.
97 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Following on from the great 2002 vintage of this wine, the 2004 is equally memorable. It is a magnificent wine, structured and beautifully balanced between the ripe white fruits and the tight texture that will allow it to age many years. While drinkable now, it is still young at 11 years, still with great potential. Drink now, until 2024, and probably beyond.
95 Points - James Suckling
94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2004 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is a charming, beautifully balanced wine in its prime today. Offering up aromas of golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, freshly baked bread, iodine, spices and candied peel, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and charming, with a pillowy mousse, lively acids and a long, saline, delicately caramel-inflected finish. While this vintage has long lived in the shadow of 2002, this is an excellent Churchill in its own right.
94 Points - Wine Spectator
This creamy version has a subtle richness, folded into a fresh, elegant frame. Shows layers of crème de cassis, toast and pastry cream, with citrus peel, smoky mineral and spice accents echoing on the long finish. Drink now through 2027.
