The Story
Pio Cesare Barbaresco 2021 is an elegant, structured, and beautifully harmonious Italian red wine that perfectly captures the prestige of a classic Piedmontese vintage. Sourced exclusively from the family's prized estate vineyards in Treiso (Cascina Il Bricco and San Stefanetto) and San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, it pours a vibrant garnet-red color in the glass. The nose is exceptionally captivating and complex, unfurling aromas of dark brambleberries, black cherries, and crushed rose petals, elegantly layered with notes of iodine, fresh mint, graphite, and dried orange peel. On the palate, this medium-to-full-bodied selection delivers a focused core of fresh cherry and redcurrant fruit, accompanied by savory undertones of licorice, sweet pipe tobacco, and woodland spices. Balanced by a bright, racy acidity and firmly woven, linear tannins, it exhibits wonderful tension and a deep mineral drive that carries through to a long, graceful finish.
Food Pairing: This sophisticated Barbaresco pairs magnificently with slow-cooked veal or lamb shanks, duck ragù over fresh pasta, wild mushroom risotto, rich truffle-infused dishes, or aged Alpine cheeses like Castelmagno and Grana Padano.
The aromas of iodine and oyster shell really come through together with black cherries and dark brambleberries. Medium body with firm and racy tannins that run the length of the wine. March 2025 release. Drinkable but even better in three or four years. Try after 2028.
Lithe and graceful, this red plays cherry and strawberry fruit and white pepper against balsamic notes of eucalyptus and menthol. Firms up on the finish, where dense tannins leave their grip.
