The Story
Gérard Bertrand Château de Villemajou Rouge 2021 is a deeply concentrated, opulent, and masterfully structured organic and biodynamic red wine from the heart of the Languedoc region. Inherited by Gérard Bertrand from his father, this historic family estate features exceptionally old Carignan vines growing alongside Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre on a unique terroir of rolled river pebbles, clay, and limestone. It pours a dense, brooding garnet-red with intense purple glints along the glass. The bouquet is highly expressive and complex, opening with an aromatic wave of jammy blackberry, blueberry compote, and dark plum, intricately layered with notes of black liquorice, roasted coffee, dried Mediterranean herbs, and sweet baking spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and supple, delivering a powerful core of black orchard fruits supported by an energetic acidity and velvety, mouth-coating tannins. Part of the Syrah and Carignan undergo whole-bunch carbonic maceration to enhance fruit purity before the final blend is aged for 10 to 12 months in traditional French oak barrels, resulting in a beautifully balanced, long finish marked by savory leather and a lingering peppery spice.
Food Pairing: Pairs spectacularly with roasted rack of lamb, slow-braised wild boar shoulder, grilled ribeye steaks, rosemary-infused venison stews, and mature artisanal cheeses.
93 Points - James Suckling
A seductive nose of dark berries, black olives, dried thyme, roasted meat and some leather. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Structured and well-balanced with a caressing texture at the center. Fruity and compact in the finish. Carignan, syrah, grenache noir and mourvedre. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.
