The Story

The Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Sugarille Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is a monumental, profoundly structured, and muscular Old World red wine that represents the most powerful single-vineyard expression in the estate's portfolio. Sourced from a historical site documented since 1547, it pours a medium-dense ruby colour with a fine garnet sheen in the glass. The nose reveals a highly complex, memorable bouquet bursting with masses of thyme, incense, rosemary, and cedar wood, giving way to dried strawberries, Parma violets, and tobacco. On the palate, this full-bodied, pure Sangiovese is sleek and tightly wound, coating the mouth with clear raspberry fruit, savory red berry saturation, and a subtle inner sweetness unique to this ancient plot. Grown in soils exceptionally rich in galestro limestone and white clay, its imposing structural depth is shaped by a complex web of fine-grained, chewy tannins and a brilliant, fresh acidity that guarantees a long and glorious evolution. Matured for 24 months in oak barrels followed by refinement in concrete vats, it cruises into an incredibly long, persistent finish accented by earthy notes and a bitter licorice tinge.

Food Pairing: This muscular and brooding Brunello demands rich, structured dishes to match its power, making it a perfect partner for slow-braised wild boar ragù, prime cuts of grilled dry-aged ribeye steak, classic osso buco, roasted venison, and a selection of hard, highly aged artisanal cheeses like Pecorino Toscano

98 Points - James Suckling

A sleek and graceful wine with aromas of Parma violets, licorice, red fruit and a touch of mint. Full-bodied, it shows elegant tannins with freshness and well-tamed power. Amazing length, with a polished cherry pit aftertaste. Drinkable now, but intended for aging. Drink or hold.
