The Story

E. Guigal Chateau d'Ampuis Cote-Rotie 2020 is a profoundly concentrated and terroir-driven wine that perfectly embodies the excellence of the northern Rhône Valley. Sourced from seven exceptional and historic vineyards across both the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune slopes, it displays a deep red hue with striking violet reflections. The bouquet is extraordinarily expressive, offering seductive aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum, intricately layered with notes of smoked meat, violets, graphite, espresso, and noble oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and impeccably structured. Fine, elegant tannins support a generous core of vibrant dark fruit, leading into a very long, smoky, and spice-laden finish that promises exceptional aging potential.

Food Pairing: Ideal with roasted lamb, hearty red meats, wild game, and robust aged cheeses.

96 Points -

Thick, chewy and large-boned, this oozes chocolate and cherry liqueur notes encased in a robe of charred cedar. An intriguing earthiness (wet leaves, tobacco) plays off the spice cake accent and tug of bitterness on a creamy, rich palate, all wrapped up in smoke, camphor and mesquite elements. Impressively balanced, with an endless finish, this contemplative wine is also a hedonistic pleasure. Syrah and Viognier. Drink now through 2040.

95 Points -

A beautifully crafted Cote-Rotie for this ripe vintage that is already a delight to drink. Excellent balance of smokiness, meaty character and fine tannins, the generous oak already very well integrated. Very long finish with plenty of drive and smoky character. Drink or hold.
94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

As usual, one of the most brooding wines in the range, the 2020 Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis is no exception, opening with a deep, complex bouquet of smoke, oak, spices and gentian mingled with baked dark berries and fresh licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it’s more enveloping than the 2019, built around a generous core of ripe fruit and concluding with a long, spicy finish. This is a notable success in the vintage.
